September Job List

• Buy Spring Bulbs to get your favourites! Plant daffodils by mid-September to ensure a good spring show
• Plant prepared Hyacinths in bowls for Christmas: place in a cool, dark place until mid-November
• Plant biennials including wallflowers – we have plants ready-to-go
• Harvest apples, pears and plums as they ripen
• Sow hardy annuals for early next year; calendula and nigella
• Reduce feeding as growth slows
• Start composting fallen leaves or begin to create your own leaf mould
• Sow spring cabbages and over wintering lettuce
• Earth up leeks and celery
• Continue to clear spent crops and prepare empty beds
• Plant strawberry runners in their new positions
• Divide overcrowded perennials
• Harvest pumpkins and squash before the frosts
• Plant Japanese Onions, over-winter for earlier summer cropping
• Keep dead-heading to prolong flowering
• End of month: scarify & aerate your lawn
• Consider growing Green Manures in vegetable garden to grow over winter, dig in in early spring to add nutrients
